Unreal Engine Does an Epic U-Turn

Twelve months ago this month, Epic announced they were going to charge a monthly subscription to use their game development engine UDK4. I did a post on how this would harm indie developers here.

Now, some days ago, they announced their UE4 engine would be free. Seems maybe they had a change of heart and saw the light or they just had a big drop off in users, either way it seems game development is free once again and they still get royalties once you actually make any money from your work, which makes far more sense than taking money from people that may or may not ever get to turn a profit.

So this also is good news for developers who may not be building just for profit either.

Let’s hope they don’t change their mind once they have more developers hooked.
